I. Construction of green corridor
The green corridor is a groundbreaking initiative for optimizing the use of farmland and forestry resources. The overall goal is to: revitalize the rural environment, develop sustainable forestry, increase forest coverage, establish a comprehensive and user-friendly ecotourism network, and present Taiwan to the world as Ilha Formosa (beautiful island in Portuguese).
- The COA is committed to planting trees in plain and coastal areas to create green belts. Farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs were encouraged by governmental incentives to reforest fallowed farmland and step up vegetation recovery in coastal windbreaks. These efforts were to establish sustainable green belts as well as to develop recreational enterprises. In 2007, reforestation was undertaken in plain areas totaling 452 hectares, in forest parks totaling 200 hectares, and coastal windbreaks totaling 68.9 hectares. In total, the areas reforested reached 720.9 hectares.
- The national trail system has by now. Fourteen major trail systems, 56 auxiliary ones planned and 120 km of existing forest trails repaired. Seven promotion materials were published during the year. A book entitled Above Mountains of Taiwan was recognized as the best governmental publication for the year. The COA also invited the concerned organizations to form a leave-no-trace committee to train 200 trainers for the leave-no-trace movement, and organized a national mountaineering conference on an integrated hiking management system. Various activities were also organized to mobilize volunteer participation in trail maintenance and other projects. More than 3.6 million people participated in 80 events held in 2007.
