II. Sustainable management of forestry
A total of 758 hectares of forest land were reforested for greening/beautification in 2007. Preventive measures against forest fires, illegal logging, and excessive crop cultivation were also implemented. In 2007, 33 cases of illegal logging and 43 cases of excessive cultivation were intercepted and 33 forest fires extinguished. The forest and nature conservation police force in cooperation with the forest rangers seized 201 suspects in 128 cases under Forest Act, and 138 suspects in 118 cases under the Wildlife Conservation Act during the year.
The COA continued with various national land conservation and restoration programs. During the year, the works included 166 projects on sabo engineering in forests and soil and water conservation engineering in potential landslide areas, 10 projects on watershed management, and 58 on improving and maintaining forest trails. In the year, the COA also continued to manage 464,900 hectares of protected forests, and classified 42,500 hectares of land as protected forests.
