A Major Breakthrough in Plant Variety Right Negotiations: Taiwan Plant Breeders Can Apply for Protection in Israel

2012-01-31

The Council of Agriculture (COA) said a major breakthrough was achieved finally after making great efforts in Taiwan-Israeli agricultural negotiations for more than three years. Israel’s Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry informed Taiwan in a letter on January 12, 2012 that its Agriculture minister has signed an official document agreeing to accept the application by Taiwan plant breeders for plant variety right protection in Israel. In the future Taiwan breeders applying for such protection in Israel don’t have to give authorization to Israeli traders or agents in advance.

TaiwanPlant Variety Rights Are Protected Through Negotiation Mechanism of Taiwan-Israeli Agricultural Cooperation Conference

In view of the fact that the Israeli orchid industry has gradually developed, the COA has begun negotiations with Israel since 2007 to prevent Taiwan orchid variety rights from being infringed in the Middle East country. Since Israel has agreed to accept the application by Taiwan owners of Phalaenopsis breeding right for plant variety right protection there, there is more incentives for the industry of both countries to cooperate in developing West Asian and European markets.
