The Council of Agriculture and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada held the “14^th Taiwan-Canada Agricultural Working Group Meeting” on November 10, 2021. They discussed issues of mutual concern including trade in agriproducts, regulatory harmonization, cooperation in health food R&D and technology, and market access. Then on November 11 the two countries held the “Taiwan-Canada Forum on Sustainable and Circular Agriculture,” engaging in exchanges of experiences with policies related to sustainable and circular agriculture. Agribusinesses from the two sides were also invited to engage in dialogue to seek out collaborative business opportunities including investment and start-up companies.

Taiwan and Canada signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Agricultural Cooperation in 1994 and have continued to convene agricultural cooperation conferences to promote a variety of mutually beneficial cooperation projects, resolve agriproduct trade problems of mutual concern, and deepen exchanges and cooperation on agricultural policies, agriproduct trade, and agricultural technology. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected many international cooperation programs over the last two years, there has been no suspension of agricultural exchanges between Taiwan and Canada, and the two sides have made progress in a number of fields related to agriproduct applications including development, scientific research, and innovation in functional foods like rice and legumes as well as plant-based protein products. In addition, Canada is the second biggest source country of organic agriproduct imports into Taiwan and in May of 2020 the two countries signed an organic equivalency agreement to further expand trade in organic agriproducts.
