Taiwan Shares Success of AI-Driven Agriculture at 10th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting
The 2025 10th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) was held in Incheon, Korea on August 10. A delegation from Taiwan led by Deputy Minister Hu Jong-I of the Ministry of Agriculture. During the FSMM, Deputy Minister Hu shared how Taiwan's AI-driven strategies are tackling critical challenges like climate change, labor shortages, and supply chain disruptions. The presentation drew high praise and recognition from fellow member economies, who expressed a strong interest in expanding exchanges with Taiwan on these critical issues.
The APEC theme for 2025 is “Building a Sustainable Tomorrow” with priority given to promotion of the idea “Connect, Innovate, Prosper.” Within this framework, agricultural issues have focused on innovation and development of agriculture and food systems. At the FSMM, Deputy Minister Hu explained Taiwan’s introduction of AI, Big Data, and the Internet of Things into agriculture. Taiwan’s goal is to build a precision agriculture system and enhance the efficiency of agricultural production while constructing an agricultural and food production system that is adaptable to climate change.
In addition, in coordination with efforts to reduce food loss and waste under the “APEC Food Security Roadmap Towards 2030,” Taiwan hosted a workshop this June on “Reducing Food Loss and Waste through Packaging Innovations.” The event brought together officials from across the APEC region to exchange policy insights and technical expertise, aiming to build members' capacity to strengthen regional food security.
During the meeting, Deputy Minister Hu held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the host nation, South Korea, and key APEC members. They exchanged views on a range of issues, including Asia-Pacific food security, advancements in smart agriculture, and inspection and quarantine protocols for Taiwan's agricultural exports. These meetings actively strengthened substantive agricultural cooperation between Taiwan and fellow APEC economies.
The Ministry of Agriculture states that APEC is an important platform for Taiwan's technical cooperation and information exchange on sustainable agriculture and food security. Moving forward, Taiwan will deepen its engagement in APEC and foster greater agricultural partnerships with member economies. Our primary goal is to brand Taiwan’s agricultural sector as advanced, safe, and sustainable, while showcasing our high-end technologies and premium agriproducts to the international community.
