The Domestic Agricultural Situation
Let’s look first at overall production of agro-products. In 2011, largely because the climate was stable and there were no major natural disasters, the value of production in agriculture rose by 4.49% over 2010, to an estimated total of NT$445.6 billion. Of this figure, farm crops accounted for 45.12%, animal husbandry products for 33.96%, fisheries products for 20.83%, and forestry products for only 0.09%.
Turning to trade in agro-products, in 2011 imports of agro-products totaled US$14.84 billion, an increase of 16.31% over 2010. Main imports included grains and secondary grain products, oilseeds and oilseed powder, and lumber and secondary lumber goods. Exports of agro-products totaled US$4.67 billion, an increase of 16.08% over 2010. Main exports included primary and secondary fisheries products, and leather and processed leather goods.
Finally, looking at prices of agro-products, the average wholesale price index for all farms, fisheries, forestry, and animal husbandry products rose 4.36% over 2010. The main cause was the rise in costs of imported raw materials. Breaking down the aggregate figure, farm products rose in price by 7.91%, forestry products by 0.28%, fisheries products by 16.97%, and animal husbandry products by 5.58%.
