(1) Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau (CWB) issued a sea warning for Typhoon Morakot at 8:30 pm on August 5. The COA and all related agencies immediately activated our emergency response teams, began disaster prevention efforts, and prepared for eventual disaster relief. Based on the rain flow records provided by the CWB, from August 6 through 11, the COA issued a total of 21 separate debris flow warnings, helping local governments evacuate 11,032 people. We also encouraged 1,311 people to leave forest recreational areas and housed 3,430 mainland Chinese fishing vessel workers during the typhoon period.

(2) Typhoon Morakot inflicted heavy losses on Taiwan’s agricultural sector that totaled NT$19.41 billion. Agricultural product losses made up the highest proportion of this total (56.1%) at NT$10.9 billion, while flooding fields were second with a loss of NT$7.65 billion, or 39.4%. Of the damaged products, crop losses and fishery goods losses were highest, totaling NT$5 billion and NT$4.17 billion respectively, while livestock and forestry losses totaled NT$1.49 billion and NT$240 million respectively. Areas affected by the storm covered 22 cities and counties. Agricultural product losses were highest in Pingtung County with NT$2.7 billion, while Nantou County at NT$2.2 billion, Kaohsiung County at NT$1.7 billion, and Chiayi at NT$1.3 billion.
